Record high water levels are expected in Bihar as significant discharge through the Birpur and Valmikinagar barrages has raised flood concerns in 14 districts. The threat is due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of north Bihar rivers in Nepal and their basins. Water discharge through the Birpur barrage increased from 4.80 to 5.31 lakh cusecs, and through the Valmikinagar barrage from 3.84 to 4.49 lakh cusecs. The Kosi river merges with the Ganga at Kursela in Katihar district, while the Gandak river flows north of Patna in Saran district, indicating potential flooding in Bhagalpur and Katihar districts. Precautionary measures, such as public announcements and canceling officials' leaves, have been initiated. The water resources department issued a high alert, anticipating discharge to reach 6.81 lakh cusecs and possibly surpassing the highest recorded levels. Many districts are on high alert, including Supaul, Saharsa, and Bhagalpur.Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Muzaffarpur, Saran, Vaishali, and Samastipur are facing floods as the Gandak river is overflowing. Additionally, the Bagmati river is also threatening Sitamarhi, Sheohar, and Muzaffarpur districts with serious floods.
